Your basic right is at risk

Proponents of gay marriage are losing the argument - so they're trying to prevent the debate from even happening.

A lawsuit filed in Atlanta this week seeks to prevent Georgia voters from deciding Nov. 2 whether to amend the state constitution to recognize marriage only as a union of a man and a woman.

As usual, when activists on the left can't win over a majority of the people, they run to the courts seeking dictatorial mandates from the bench. That's not representative democracy; that's judicial tyranny.

This has been the routine for years, now. But it's hit a new low this week in Georgia: Liberal activists are now arguing that Georgia citizens have no right to amend their state constitution as they see fit.

In essence, they're saying that amending the constitution - at least in ways they disagree with - is unconstitutional. That's preposterous on its face.

Gay marriage proponents are making two goofy arguments in order to prevent this bit of representative democracy in action.

One is that the amendment isn't necessary - that there's already a state law banning gay marriage.

Talk about a Trojan horse argument! Those same people would have the courts overturn that law in a second, if they could.

No, as long as we have liberal activist judges, none of our laws is truly safe. Absent removing law-writing, tyrannical judges from the bench, the best we can do is go around them and amend our constitutions. That puts such judges in the untenable position of having to declare the constitution unconstitutional. Not even the most left-leaning judge can pose such an internally inconsistent argument.

The second reason gay marriage proponents want to block this vote of the people is the absurd claim that the proposed amendment is somehow misleading.

Well, you decide for yourself. The question says:

"Shall the constitution be amended so as to provide that this state shall recognize as marriage only the union of man and woman?"

Do you find that in any way vague?

The only misleading going on here is the gay rights crowd hiding its real agenda. Don't be fooled: These zealots want to force you to accept their lifestyle and, further, to officially recognize it in law. They're willing to do nearly anything - including suspending our democratic processes - in order to get their way.

Last time we checked, amending our social contract which we call our constitution was an absolute right. No one can be allowed to take that away.
