Wagener-Salley athletic director Ken Tucker confirmed Wednesday that Ryan Russell has been removed from his position as head football coach. Tucker took over as interim head coach starting with Wednesday's practice and will be on the sidelines for Friday's home Region 4-A game against C.A. Johnson.

Tucker declined to comment on the details of Russell's removal, deferring to Wagener-Salley principal Pat Keating, who was unavailable for comment Wednesday evening.

Under Russell's direction, the War Eagles lost at home to Hunter-Kinard-Tyler 66-6 last week to fall to 0-5 on the season.

The War Eagles inherit an interim coach with two years of head coaching experience.

"We didn't try to make any radical changes," Tucker said of Wednesday's practice. "The thing for us Friday night is to go out and try to play well and play hard. We can't be concerned about anything else."
