PLAY OF THE GAME: Strom Thurmond's Raleigh Yeldell broke free on the right side on the first play from scrimmage in the second half for a 41-yard score.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Senior running back Nick Williamson led Strom Thurmond with 127 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

WHY STROM THURMOND WON: The Rebels (6-2, 3-0 in Region 3-AA) were deeper and faster on both sides of the ball. They kept their focus to set up a showdown with Newberry for the region lead.

WHY SALUDA LOST: The Tigers (2-6, 0-3) crossed midfield only once and tallied only 23 yards of offense. They did keep the game close for a half, trailing 9-0 at intermission.

QUOTABLE: "We've put ourselves in position that not a lot of people thought that we would be in (at this point). I was very pleased with our focus after the first half. Win, lose or draw next week, I'm very proud of what this team has accomplished." -- Strom Thurmond coach Lee Sawyer

NEXT: Newberry at Strom Thurmond, 7:30 p.m. Friday; Gilbert at Saluda, 7:30 p.m. Friday
