It was a rough weekend at the Columbus Softball Complex as the area's four representatives in Georgia's softball playoffs were knocked out early in the double-elimination tournament.

After falling into the loser's bracket with a 1-0 loss to Collins Hill, Greenbrier was eliminated in two games, losing a heartbreaker in its second game to Kennesaw Mountain, 4-1, on a walk-off, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.

Thomson and Screven County also were ousted after playing just two games.

Evans managed to record a win in its first game against Whitewater before losing to Marist and Sequoyah.

DREAM MATCHUP DENIED: The hopes for a Class AAA state soccer championship between local rivals Westminster and Augusta Prep were dashed Thursday in Macon, Ga., when both teams were shut out in the state semifinals.

The Cavaliers were eliminated after a 4-0 loss to Mount de Sales.

The Wildcats were knocked out by Stratford, which won 2-0.

WOLFPACK RUN ENDS: Greenbrier reached the Elite Eight of the Class AAAAA volleyball playoffs, but the seeding committee certainly didn't do them any favors by pitting them against Pope, the state's top-ranked team. The Lady Greyhounds made short work of the Wolfpack, winning in just three games. Greenbrier finished the year at 43-5.

PREP CAPTURES REGION: Augusta Prep's girls cross country team won the GISA 4-AAA region meet on Saturday, beating out second-place Trinity Christian.

Maggie McLeod set the tone for the Cavaliers, finishing third with a time of 22:49. McLeod was one of five Augusta Prep runners in the top 10, including Frances Fernando (seventh), Alexis Baker (eighth), Megan Fechter (ninth) and Halie Huggins (10th).

Augusta Prep's boys came in second, just behind Trinity Christian.

The Cavs had three in the top five: Sam Fox (second), Booker Regan (third) and Eric Brown (fifth).

BIG WIN FOR SMALLEY: Westside's DeAndre Smalley won the Richmond County All-County cross country meet Thursday with a time of 16:09. Laney's Raheem Newton , nursing an injured hip, finished second with 16:27. Smalley and Newton finished 1-2 in every meet in which both runners competed this year.

PALMETTO STATE PLAYOFFS BEGIN: Several area volleyball teams open the South Carolina state playoffs this week. Aiken, South Aiken, Silver Bluff, Williston-Elko and Fox Creek each have home games in the first round.
