Brigham carries Bears one step closer to playoffs

WAYNESBORO, Ga. --- It was one of those games where both teams knew what was on the line: a chance to make the Class AAA playoffs.

Burke County quarterback Terrell Brigham showed it by his offensive and defensive performance against Thomson on Friday night at the Bear Den.

Burke County ended up winning 28-7 thanks to three unanswered touchdowns -- one before the half and two more after halftime.

After Thomson (2-7, 1-4 Region 3-AAA) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on its opening drive, it quickly became a Brigham show.

He threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Bob Osborne to tie the game on the Bears' opening drive. He then engineered a perfectly timed touchdown drive and scored on a 1-yard run with 15 seconds to play in the first half to give the Bears (6-3, 2-3) a 14-7 lead.

The go-ahead touchdown was set up on an interception by Keyon Lewis, who picked off an errant throw by Thomson backup quarterback Josh Jones.

Jones started the game for injured quarterback Phillip Anderson, who sprained an ankle during last week's game against West Laurens.

Lewis returned the interception 60 yards to the Thomson 18.

"I thought it was a tough physical contest," Burke County coach Eric Parker said. "Now we're one step closer to being in the playoffs. But we've got to get past West Laurens next week."

Parker said Thomson is "the best 2-7 (team) I think I've ever played."

Parker also praised the performance of Brigham, who also scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter.

"We run out of the spread, and he's a perfect fit for our offense," he said.

The loss eliminates Thomson from playoff contention for the first time since coach Luther Welsh has been coaching the Bulldogs.

"Anytime you lose, it's disappointing," Welsh said. "It probably hurts a little more because this is the first time it's ever happened to me at Thomson."
