BALDWIN 34, THOMSON 19
PLAY OF THE GAME: Baldwin sophomore backup quarterback DeAndre Thomas scored on a 9-yard run with 3:43 to play in the third quarter. It broke open a close game in which Thomson trailed by a point, 20-19, at halftime.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Baldwin senior running back Kelvin Simmons gave the Braves a big lift in the second half with several big runs. He cashed in on one of those runs -- a 10-yard scamper with 5:21 to play that gave the Braves a two-touchdown lead.
WHY BALDWIN WON: The Braves, who captured the Region 3-AAA championship a week ago when they defeated Washington County, finished a perfect 10-0 regular season. They won against Thomson because of their abundance of talent with experienced players.
WHY THOMSON LOST: The Bulldogs, like they have all season, played with inexperienced players at many key positions. Even though they played with a lot of intensity and looked impressive -- both offensively and defensively at times -- they still weren't able to score when they needed to.
QUOTABLE: "Our kids played well," said Thomson coach Luther Welsh . "They really put forth a great effort. It was the best game they've played all season."
NEXT: Thomson ended its season with a 2-8 record. Baldwin will be playing in the first round of the playoffs next week.
