Evans fades late in loss to Ware Co.

WAYCROSS, Ga. --- Ware County rallied for 12 unanswered points in the final 1:54 of the game to edge Evans 18-14 in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs on Friday night.

Evans led 14-6 late in the third quarter after Jonathan Finch's second rushing touchdown of the night.

Ware County cut Evans' lead to 14-12 when J'ontae Barkley scored on a 16-yard run with 1:54 to play in the game.

On the ensuing kickoff, Evans turned the ball over on its first play from scrimmage when Finch fumbled. It was Evans' only turnover of the game.

Ware County capitalized, scoring on a 43-yard pass from Jimmy Wilkins to Barkley with 55 seconds left.

Finch led all rushers with 91 yards on 17 carries.

Evans finishes the season with an 8-3 record. Ware County is 6-5.

ST. MATTHEWS, S.C. --- Senior quarterback Stephen Balentine accounted for 11 scores -- 10 passing and one rushing -- and the Wardlaw Academy defense did just enough, as Wardlaw Academy beat Patrick Henry Academy in the SCISA Eight-man football finals.

The victory caps the second consecutive unbeaten championship season for Wardlaw (11-0) and extends the team's current winning streak to 23 consecutive games.

Balentine completed 22 passes for 453 yards and 10 touchdowns while rushing for 142 yards and another score on the ground.

Patrick Henry was led by junior running back Austin Rowell, who rushed for 387 yards on 37 carries.

COLUMBUS, Ga. --- Quarterback Devin Burns scored on a 72-yard run with just over four minutes left in the game to lift Carver to the Class AAA playoff victory.

The play came on a fourth-and-one from the Carver 28.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. --- Defending Class AAA state champion Myrtle Beach dashed Midland Valley's hopes of a 10-victory season in the second round of the state playoffs.

The Mustangs scored the first points of the game, on a Jeremy Robinson 3-yard run in the first quarter, but never scored again.

Marquett Carr rushed for 70 yards for the Mustangs.
