Country singer Joe Nichols got an early Christmas present recently in signing a deal to star in a Broadway musical version of the 1992 George Strait movie Pure Country .

Mr. Nichols (Brokenheartsville, Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off ), will portray burned-out country superstar Dusty Chandler, played by Mr. Strait in the movie.

Grand Ole Opry star Lorrie Morgan will play Mr. Nichols' love interest, Harley Tucker.

"We'll hit Broadway next fall," Mr. Nichols said backstage at the WKXC-FM Guitar Pull in November. "I'll be Rusty, though, rather than Dusty. Warner Bros. Pictures owns the franchise for Dusty, so the Broadway company creating the show had to make a minor adjustment."

The soundtrack of the movie Pure Country is Mr. Strait's most commercially successful release, having sold more than 6 million copies.

It spawned his No. 1 hits I Cross My Heart and Heartland, The King of Broken Hearts (later recorded by Mark Chesnutt and Lee Ann Womack) and Where the Sidewalk Ends .

Mr. Nichols said the Broadway version will feature songs from the movie as well as new songs by Steve Dorff, John Bettis (who co-wrote Heartland ) and Rex McGee.

"Oh, yeah, this is strictly a musical made for Broadway," Mr. Nichols said. "I think there will be 17 or 18 songs with lots of scenes and will last about an hour and 45 minutes. It's going to be a good time."

TERRI GIBBS AT ALDERSGATE: Country-gospel singer Terri Gibbs will perform at 11 p.m. on New Year's Eve, and just after midnight, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 3185 Wheeler Road, for the grand opening of the Family Life Center at the church. Doors open at 9 p.m. The event is free.

Ms. Gibbs will be preceded with music by The Aldersgate Praise Band and Kyle Jones.

JEKYLL ISLAND BLUEGRASS: The 34th annual New Year's Bluegrass Festival will be Dec. 31-Jan. 2 in the Jekyll Island, Ga., Convention Center. Daily tickets are $35 general admission, $40 reserved for adults, $20 general admission and $25 reserved for ages 7-15. Headliners include Dailey and Vincent, Bobby Osborne, Rhonda Vincent and The Rage, Doyle Lawson, Jesse McReynolds and Marty Raybon.
