WHO: Sister Janet Roddy

HER STORY: The Boston native was the principal of Immaculate Conception, a Catholic school in downtown Augusta, from 1979-96. She left for a principal's job in Hackensack, N.J., and later worked in south Philadelphia before returning to Augusta.

THE MINISTRY: Five local Catholic churches support Catholic Social Services, which was founded in 1969 to offer food and clothing assistance and runs a thrift store on Broad Street.

QUOTE: "Last week, my first week, we had standing room only in here. Even when I was at the school, we had a small food pantry. It's part of what I've been doing in my ministry for years. I want to do everything I can to expand our services and keep the mission of Catholic Social Services alive and active."
