Cadets made bowling tourney special

We witnessed the most amazing display of altruism recently.

Westside Navy JROTC students volunteered to assist an area Special Olympics bowling tournament held Jan. 12, and hosted by Columbia County schools. Fifty students led by Maj. Hank Mitchell arrived early and cleaned up after everyone left. The heartwarming part of this story is the care, friendship and assistance these students gave our 185 athletes with special needs from Columbia, Richmond, Burke and McDuffie counties.

Each NJROTC student supervised a lane of four to six students, and the smiles and encouragement they gave out so freely made the day a wonderful memory for these students. They showed maturity, compassion, patience and a strong work ethic. Many of our students have talked about their friends they made in the NJROTC. There were no incidents, and the behavior of all of the students was exemplary because of the atmosphere of give and take and friendship.

I cannot commend this group enough. All of the teachers and adults were impressed with the way these Westside students gave of themselves. Many NJROTC students commented that they received more than they gave. I think it was a toss-up! Thank you, Westside NJROTC and Brunswick Bowl!
